Professor Patrick D’Haese

Professor Emeritus and former Head of  the Pathophysiology Laboratory, University of Antwerp

Antwerp, Belgium

After having led the Laboratory of Pathophysiology for many years as a full professor at the University of Antwerp, Belgium, Professor D’Haese is currently retired.

His research expertise combines basic as well as applied research and is focused on mechanisms, treatment and prevention of disease. The areas of his research mainly focus on bone metabolism, vascular calcification, renal (patho-)physiology, and trace metal disturbances in the context of chronic renal failure and occupational medicine. Within these research fields, particular attention was paid to the toxicological aspects, absorption, kinetics and accumulation and tissue distribution of (trace) metals in a more general context also

The research undertaken by Professor D’Haese in these areas means that he is ideally placed to provide high-level advice to LSI on our research into the use of phosphate binding agents.  His extraordinary expertise is particularly important in any assessment of phosphate binders from the perspective of human health.

In his research, Professor D’Haese may rely on various in vivo and in vitro models. In line with the international evolution of scientific research and/or the development of new therapeutics, existing models are continuously being updated as new models are developed and characterized. In addition to the broad expertise on animal handling, various sophisticated techniques are applied within the lab as well as in the frame of collaborative projects with other research groups/institutions/private companies.

Thanks to his research expertise, Professor D’Haese has served on several advisory and consultancy boards of private companies as well as scientific institutions.  He has (co-)authored > 300 scientific papers which has resulted in > 14.500 citations and an h-index of 70 (February 2024).
