Dr habil. Klaus-Dieter Wolter

Freelance biologist

Dr habil. Klaus-Dieter Wolter studied biology at the University of Göttingen and the Free University of Berlin.  He undertook his diploma (“Metabolic processes in the putrid sediments of the Schlei”), doctoral (“The Paleolimnology of Berlin’s Tegel Lake: A contribution to the analysis of the post-glacial development of lakes and catchments”) and habilitation (“Sustainable development – process identification and consequences for ecosystem management as case studies for lake restoration”) studies in the Limnology Department of the Technical University of Berlin under Professor Wilhelm Ripl and is currently working as a freelance biologist.

Professor Ripl developed together with him successful concepts for the restoration of the Groß-Glienicker Lake in Berlin-Brandenburg (iron treatment) and in the Alten Donau (Old Danube) in Vienna, Austria (combination of iron, calcium and nitrate treatment).  Since undertaking these projects, Klaus-Dieter has also worked on multiple large-scale restoration projects, including the Dümmer Lake in Lower Saxony (restoration of the main inflow through the use of a large constructed wetland) and Lake Werratal in Eschwege in Hessen.

During his long career, his work has focussed on both the integrated use of physical, chemical and biological data to identify predominant processes in lakes and catchments as well as the effective utilization of data to develop sustainable restoration concepts.
