Dr Miquel Lürling

Dr ir. Miquel (Mike) Lürling is associate professor at the Aquatic Ecology & Water Quality Management of Wageningen University (The Netherlands) and a guest researcher at the Department of Aquatic Ecology of the Netherlands Institute of Ecology and co-founder of the Aquatic Knowledge Center Wageningen (AKWA) that translates state-of-the art scientific knowledge into practical solutions for water issues. Since 2008 he has been a board member of the Dutch Platform Ecological Restoration of Lakes. Mike was chairman of the Plankton Ecology Group (PEG) of the International Limnology Society (Societas Internationalis Limnologiae, SIL, SIL-International Society of Limnology) for 12 years (2004-2016). He is co-founder and co-chair of the Working Group on Lake Restoration of SIL (2017 -present) and since 2021 has been a member of the Ecosystem Workstream and Capacity Development Consortium of the World Water Quality Alliance. In 2018, he started the foundation International Water Quality Management to aid achieving improved surface water quality worldwide.  

Mike holds a cum laude MSc degree in limnology (Wageningen University, 30-01-1994) and a cum laude PhD degree in plankton ecology (Wageningen University, 12-05-1999). He has over 25 years’ experience in aquatic ecology, water quality research and university teaching. His main research focuses on eutrophication control and mitigating cyanobacterial nuisance, which includes the development of novel approaches, such as ‘floc & lock’ techniques, testing products released on the market for water authorities, in-situ and whole lake experiments, cyanotoxin analyses and research on the mechanisms that promote cyanobacteria blooming and toxin production.

Mike has published 169 peer reviewed articles in the scientific literature (Scopus, 02-10-2021).
